UK Biobank

UK Biobank is a unique biomedical database, providing open research access to a set of volunteer health data that is broad, deep, and long-term. As a new internal team prepared for big announcements and a forward shift in how they communicated, they needed a new way to explain the resource’s value. The above animation, produced following audience research on a variety of concepts and language choices, does just that.

Simultaneously, they announced a huge landmark: The release of 500,000 whole genome sequences. The complete DNA of every one of their participants, and wanted to express the scientific significance, the human contribution, and the real-world impact it could achieve. Having worked with Two Toes Creative on The Lancet’s 200 Anniversary, I knew they’d be just right to help realise the vision:

Building on this work, UK Biobank needed an updated set of brand guidelines. With a new website on the horizon, a growing and maturing communications team, and a history of somewhat inconsistent branding, we refined what they had, removed what they didn’t need, and added some simple flair to give their communications a more contemporary, serious, and identifiable character.

The brand package includes animated assets, templates for social, presentations, and web graphics, custom assets built from real-world UK Biobank research, and guidelines to take back control of their visual communications.
